Here's something we didn't expect to find in this line of work.
Someone finds a wallet on a seat. Nobody is watching them. There is no reward, no camera, and no consequence.
And they hand it in.
Not every time. But most of the time, by a wide margin.
Nobody makes them do it
That's the part worth sitting with.
Handing something in is mildly annoying. You have to find a staff member. You might have to wait. You will never learn whether it made it back to anyone. You get nothing at all except a slightly worse afternoon.
People do it anyway. In airports, in stadiums, at hotel pools, in taxi back seats, all over the world.
Which means the hard part is already done
Think about what that means.
The most difficult thing you could ask of a system like this is for millions of strangers to voluntarily act in someone else's interest, at their own cost, unsupervised.
That already happens. Every day. For free.
Honest people are not the bottleneck.
So why don't more things get home?
Because everything after the handoff is where it falls apart.
The item goes in a bin. The bin becomes a shelf. The shelf becomes a spreadsheet. Somewhere in there, an owner calls and gets a busy signal, or guesses the wrong building, or gives up on day two.
None of that is the finder's fault. They did their part. The system just didn't do its part back.
That's worth being clear about, because it's easy to talk about lost items as though people are careless and dishonest. Mostly they're neither. They lose things because they're human, and they hand things in because they're decent.
The least we can do
If a stranger is willing to go out of their way for someone they'll never meet, the least the rest of us can do is not lose the thing again on the way back.
That's the job. Take the good thing that already happened and make sure it finishes.
