With 2023 coming to an end, we look back at the past year, sharing a snapshot of the Boomerang platform’s most commonly lost items, trends, fun facts, and best practices for getting your lost item back.
The most commonly reported lost items on the platform were credit cards, cell phones, wallets, and headphones.
The most common returned items on the platform were credit cards, cell phones, headphones, jackets, and hats.
As the data shows, wallets are one of the most reported lost items on the platform, but unfortunately, wallets do not always get found and uploaded to Boomerang, where a match and return is initiated.
However, not all found items always receive claims from their owner. Sometimes, people don’t bother trying to recover their lost items. The most commonly unclaimed items on Boomerang were AirPods, sweaters, tablets, glasses, and home keys.
The most unique lost items #FoundOnBoomerang in 2023 were power tools, a CPAP Machine, a Yamaha Keyboard, a Violin, golf clubs, a stroller, and an Oculus VR Headset.
People lose items year-round. However, the data shows that in the month of October, people tend to be more forgetful than in the other months.
Boomerang has partners all across the country – the top 5 most shipped to states for items recovered on Boomerang are New York, California, Texas, Florida, and Georgia.
We recommend a few best practices to consider when you have lost an item.
When submitting a claim on the Boomerang platform, be as detailed as possible. The more information, the better. If you have photos of your item or can source look-alike images of your lost item, our AI-powered image recognition technology leverages these images to identify your item in our found item inventory. We strongly recommend investing in device trackers; they are incredibly helpful for transparency, so you know generally where your item is. Boomerang can leverage this information to help our partners recover the items faster.
As we tie a bow on 2023, I want to express my heartfelt appreciation to our partners who play a pivotal role in recovering items on Boomerang. Their commitment to reuniting people with their lost belongings is the driving force behind the platform’s effectiveness. A returned item is not possible without you. I also want to thank the Boomerang team for showing up every single day to pioneer a breakthrough solution for our generation. Lost & Found was broken until we came to solve it.
Cheers to closing 2023 with gratitude and welcoming 2024 with great gusto, courage, and resilience to push harder than ever to get people back the items they love.
Wishing you all a happy & safe New Year.
